
Making Bathroom Heaters That Don’t Blind You
When we’re building infrared lamps for the bathroom, the goal is simple: we want you to feel the heat, not be blinded by the light. Most standard short-wave lamps are basically light cannons. They blast out a spectrum that’s way too harsh, which can actually stress out your eyes. It’s even worse for babies, whose eyes are still developing and can’t handle that kind of intensity. So, we changed how they work. The trick to eye safety We don’t just use raw glass. We add specific dopants to the quartz or use special coatings to filter out the UV and that annoying, bright visible light. By shifting the energy toward the mid-to-long wave range, the heat goes where it belongs—into your skin and the moisture in the air—instead of hitting your retina. You get a soft, cozy glow instead of that blinding halogen glare. It feels more like a warm hug and less like an interrogation lamp. The guts of the machine These units run on your normal home power, but the secret is in the filament. We tweak the tungsten so it hits the perfect temperature—hot enough to warm you up fast, but not so hot that it starts spitting out blue light. And since bathrooms are basically steam rooms, we use high-purity quartz. If the glass isn’t top-notch, the humidity will chew through it, and the bulb will burn out way too soon. One big thing: the housing has to be airtight. If moisture leaks in and hits that scorching hot glass? Pop. Thermal shock happens, and your tube is toast. Real-world installation Most of these are just drop-in replacements for R7s or similar bases, so they’re easy to swap. One heads-up, though. Because we’ve filtered out the harsh light, it might feel a bit different than a raw short-wave lamp at first. You might want to play around with the mounting height until the warmth hits you just right. Just make sure there’s plenty of breathing room. If the fixture traps too much heat, the internal wiring will start to fry. Keep the air moving, and you’re good to go.
